A Late Summer Wedding Editorial at The Estate at River Run

October 30, 2026

Some venues ask you to work around them. The Estate at River Run asks you to slow down and look up. Perched high above the James River just outside Richmond, this Georgian-Revival estate gives you sweeping water views, brick and limestone that glow at golden hour, and grounds that feel like they were planted with photographs in mind.

I spent a late-summer evening here with an incredible team of creatives for an editorial session, and I want to walk you through what we made — and why this place belongs on your shortlist if you’re dreaming of a classic, garden-filled Virginia wedding.

The Estate

River Run’s 22,000-square-foot mansion has range. Upstairs, it’s all light and polish – crystal chandeliers and a marble foyer. Downstairs, the Tuscan Ballroom swaps that brightness for exposed brick and a warm, wine-cellar mood that’s made for candlelit receptions. Couples aren’t locked into one look; you can move through two very different feelings in a single day.

But honestly? For a photographer, the outside is where River Run steals the show. The back terrace looks straight out over the river valley. A curving iron staircase sweeps down to a flagstone patio. And a long walkway lined with crape myrtles leads to a little domed garden pavilion that looks like it was lifted out of an English estate.

The Couple

She wore a strapless lace gown paired with a striking beaded high-neck collar — a bold, editorial touch — and carried a cascading bouquet of calla lilies and trailing amaranthus. He wore a black tailcoat with a white vest and bow tie, a nod to true white-tie formality that felt right at home against the estate.

We started in the crape myrtle walk while the sun was still high, then followed the light as it dropped. My favorite moments weren’t the ones we planned — they were the in-between ones. A spin on the patio at the bottom of the staircase. A quiet laugh over a custom cookie. The two of them just sitting on the balustrade, watching the valley go gold.

Golden Hour on the Lawn

We set two long tables right on the front lawn, with the full brick façade behind them. As the sun dropped behind the trees, everything turned warm — the linens, the florals, the faces around the table. Friends raised a toast, and for a few minutes it stopped feeling like a shoot and started feeling like a real celebration.

The Design: Sage, Hydrangea and Golden Light

The palette leaned soft and organic — sage-green linens, antique hydrangeas in blush and celadon, towering bells of Ireland, and airy white blooms tucked into simple glass bud vases. Nothing too precious. Everything felt like it had just been gathered from a garden.

Each place setting was finished with a menu card tied in hand-dyed olive silk ribbon, crystal glassware, and vintage-style silver. The bamboo chairs added warmth and a little bit of ease against all that formal architecture.

On the terrace, a grazing table spilled over with fruit, cheeses and charcuterie on tiered silver, anchored by a dramatic floral cascade of hydrangea, smoke bush and dried sunflowers that ran right down to the stone.

A Live Painter on the Terrace

One detail I’d love to see more couples add: a live event painter. Watching a canvas come together on the terrace while the evening unfolds is something guests remember — and you go home with a one-of-a-kind keepsake from your day.

Tips for Photographing Your Wedding at River Run

  • Plan portraits around golden hour. The terrace and the front lawn face the light beautifully in the last hour before sunset. Build at least 20–30 minutes for portraits into that window.
  • Don’t skip the crape myrtle walk. It’s at its peak in mid-to-late summer — vivid pink canopies with the garden pavilion as a backdrop.
  • Use the staircase. The curved iron staircase gives you elevated angles over the patio and the river valley that are hard to get anywhere else.
  • Think about both levels. If your reception is in the Tuscan Ballroom, lean into moody, warm lighting for the evening coverage.
  • Consider drone coverage. The estate’s position above the James is breathtaking from above.
